Keeping Your BJJ Gear Clean: A Simple Guide

Clean BJJ Gi in Laundry

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), clean gear matters. It shows respect to your training partners and keeps training safe. Close contact in BJJ means gear gets exposed to sweat, bacteria, and sometimes blood. It’s not just about cleaning; it’s about disinfecting.

How to Wash Your BJJ Gear

Wash your gear at 30-40 degrees Celsius to avoid shrinking. Add a fabric disinfectant (Hygienespüler) with your detergent. This kills germs and keeps the fabric safe.

Fabric Disinfectant

Use fabric disinfectant in addition to your regular laundry detergent. Usuallly you put it into the fabric softener department of your washing machine and it will make sure you get rid of all the bad stuff on your training gear and make it smell much better as a result.

Wash everything after each use. This includes your gi, belt, and knee sleeves. It keeps your gear lasting longer and keeps you safe.

If you have a white belt or light-colored gear, be careful. Don’t wash them with colored gis at first. Colors can bleed, especially during the first few washes.

Drying Your Gear

Hang dry your gis. Tumble drying might shrink them. Make sure they’re completely dry before you put them away. This stops mold and mildew.

Storing and Transporting Gear

Keep your dirty and clean gear separate. Use a “dirty bag” for sweaty gear. This keeps your main bag clean and stops germs from spreading to your bag until you wash your gear.

Clean BJJ gear keeps you and your training partners safe. Follow these steps to take care of your gear.
